WHAT IS NATIONAL NIGHT OUT?
National Night Out is designed to (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness (2) Generate support for and participation in, local anticrime programs: (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership: and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Last years National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and local officials from more than 11,125 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 35.2 million people participated in NNO 2006.
Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils cities, towns, and neighborhoods celebrate NNO with a variety of events and activities such as block parties, ice cream socials, visits from police and other agencies, neighborhood parades, flashlight walks, contests and youth programs.
Last year Modesto ranked FIRST place in the Nation among 150 cities nationwide. In the past six years Modesto has ranked FIRST in the Nation in 2002, 2004 and 2006 and has placed SECOND in the Nation FIRST in California in 2001, 2003 and 2005 in the category of cities with populations of 100,000 to 299,999. Modesto had 123 neighborhoods participate in NNO 2006. Take a stand in your neighborhood and get involved in neighborhood watch.
